"Eight firms collected their prizes at the main awards ceremony on 24 February. Four of them - Techmeta, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, Hamamatsu Photonics and Polymicro Technologies - received the highest dictinction, the Crystal Award.

Techmeta, a French firm specialising in electron-beam welding, was rewarded for its assembly of the three components of th CMS solenoid conductor. The job consisted in welding, to a depth of 24 mm, two aluminium alloy reinforcement bars to the pure aluminium central core in which the superconducting cable is embedded. The challenge associated with this job was to ensure two continuous welds and tight bonding of the three components over a length exceeding 2.5 kilometres for each of the solenoid's 20 portions. Techmeta rose to this challenge and achieved the required results with almost micrometric precision."
